Premiered in 1957, The Balcony was one of Genet’s outstanding and controversial contributions to Post-War theatre. It is set in a brothel that specialises in elaborate sexual fantasies, where a bishop forgives a penitent and a judge punishes a thief. Meanwhile insurrection rages on the streets outside. Reflecting Genet’s fascination with the rituals of power and sexuality, The Balcony anticipates the real world revolutionary struggles that would take centre stage in his own later life and work.

The Television Workshop develops and trains young actors for stage and screen, and has a long list of outstanding and award winning actors to its credit. Started in 1983, it is now an independent organisation, currently supported by the BBC and EM Media. In addition to providing training for hundreds of young actors, The Television Workshop also offers producers and casting directors young acting talent for professional work, as well as a resource for script development and research.
